Abstract
The tortuous history of Trieste during the 20th century through the stories of two players: Gino Colaussi and Ettore Valcareggi. The process of Italianisation in Trieste during the fascist period could be seen in the Triestina football player Colaussi's tale. On the other hand, the story of Valcareggi is a symbol of the Amatori Ponziana affair: a time of tension in which both Italy and Yugoslavia were 'locking horns' for conquering the city of Trieste in the context of the Cold War.
