Storia dello Sport.
CLUEB Edizioni en-US Storia dello Sport. A decisive role in this transformation can be attributed to the models of twentieth-century historiography, with its attention to social behavior and the diverse realm of emotions. The following pages aim to highlight, including through the experiences of journals such as “Lancillotto e Nausica”, some aspects of the significance of studying sports history, its audiences, and narratives according to standards that enrich Clio’s vast and intricate domain.
Guido Panico Copyright (c) 2024 Guido Panico https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-19 2024-03-19 5 1 Herrera VS Pasolini https://storia-sport.it/index.php/sp/article/view/115
Despite their prejudice, newspaper articles are an indispensable and inescapable source for the history of sport, certainly for the reconstruction of events, but above all as material for the study of the history of ideas and mentalities. In some cases, however,
it is the press itself that becomes the scene of singular events such as those described in this article. If it is now commonplace for coaches and managers of major teams to comment on current affairs, in the 1960s it was a rarity for a coach to extend his discourse beyond the footballing sphere, and all the more so when his statements were such as to provoke the indignant reaction of a great intellectual. The only two candidates in this field are Helenio Herrera, the man who revolutionised the way the figure of the coach was interpreted and perceived in the 1960s, and Pier Paolo Pasolini, one of the few intellectuals of his time to speak, critically, about sport. The long-distance clash between the two took place in November 1969 and was triggered by some of Herrera’s comments on the function of sport as an instrument of mass distraction, reported in the Corriere della Sera on 1 November that year (Moravia-Herrera derby). Pasolini’s prickly response came a few weeks later in his ‘Chaos’ column in issue 48 of «Tempo», with the article Sport e Canzonette. If the direct confrontation between the two is concentrated in these two articles, we will see that the implications of their statements go far beyond the polemics of the moment. To fully understand the affair, it is necessary to widen our gaze to the footballing and political context of the 1960s and the personalities of the two players on the pitch. To this end, some of Pasolini’s other articles on sport, collected in Valerio Piccioni’s book Quando giocava Pasolini. Calci, corse e parole di un poeta, and a little-used source that must be treated with the utmost care: Helenio Herrera’s autobiography, La Mia Vita.
The purpose of this essay is to provide some observations on the history of Italian fencing and its role in international relations in order to launch social, political, and cultural historical researches. In particular, the text seeks to highlight how the link between this discipline, which arose primarily as a tool of personal and military defence, and the code of ethics of medieval origin called «chivalrous» has played an important role in the development of this motor practice, as well as its transformation into a recreational and sports activity. It served as a tool for the development of Italian citizens in the post-unification period, as well as a cultural output that was valued and propagated abroad. The presence of Italian fencing masters in Europe and worldwide was a widespread phenomenon until the end of World War II, and it contributed to boost Italy’s reputation outside of its national borders.
Deborah Guazzoni Copyright (c) 2024 Deborah Guazzoni https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-19 2024-03-19 5 1 Paolo Mazza, Gipo Viani e l’“invenzione” del calciomercato https://storia-sport.it/index.php/sp/article/view/112
The origins of the modern transfer market in football is an interesting but yet very little explored topic. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the process behind the development of the transfer market in Italy and to highlight the key role played by the new generation of presidents and sporting directors which took the lead of the mayor Italian clubs after the Second world war. The paper will also focus on the figures of Paolo Mazza (president of SPAL Ferrara from 1947 to 1976) and Giuseppe “Gipo” Viani (coach and sporting director of many Italian teams between 1946 and 1969) considered to be the “inventors” of the modern transfer market in Italy.
Tommaso Begotti Copyright (c) 2024 Tommaso Begotti https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-19 2024-03-19 5 1 Il messaggero ideale della Patria: la pedagogia patriottica del Giro d’Italia dalle origini agli anni Sessanta https://storia-sport.it/index.php/sp/article/view/113
In addition to being a well-known sporting competition, by express will of its founders, the Giro d’Italia has proved to be, since its debut, an effective means of patriotic propaganda. Indulging in this particular vocation, the race will try, in its various editions, to make its own personal contribution to the consolidation of the fragile Italian unification and to the formation of a national discourse in which all Italians can recognize themselves as part of a single people. The essay, which covers a long time span, from the first edition of 1909 to 1961, clearly shows how the Giro, through its routes and the words of the sports press, was, in his own way, an educator of national conscience. A particular messenger of a propaganda which, far from being granitic, will prove to be very sensitive to the changing image of Italy that the Italian political and cultural world intended to convey over the course of those decades.
Lucia Grazia Coviello Copyright (c) 2024 Lucia Grazia Coviello https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 2024-03-19 2024-03-19 5 1
